Kanye's GQ Interview for his Yeezus Campus

I came across a GQ interview for Kanye West's new 'Yeezus Campus'

It was a really interesting interview that gave me a lot to think about when it came to my design ethics and approach to architecture, something that really intrigued me about his mindset came from when he says:

'to create spaces that allow humans to maximise our potential... to take us out of the box literally and figuratively we live in boxes we leave the womb when we're born and get put directly into the tomb we can put directly into our first square space, which is the beginning of us going from being multi-dimensional and completely imaginative to placed onto a grid.

Those boxes are those grids the first route starts off with the crib then we go to schools, where that's a box then we go to higher learning a lot of times that's a box and then we end up in a job but we're working inside of a box and then we do that to try to buy a crib, actually, and then we.. you know... have children and then put our children in a crib'

I think this really shows a lot about his architectural mindset when it comes to living in enclosed spaces, his school of thought follows the principal that enclosed spaces shouldn't be square, they box us in and we stay that way our whole lives, instead we should strive to create a space that artistically challenges us and creates spaces for creative thinking and better flow. In his thought process, Kanye believes that thus will lead to a further productive and successful environment.

I agree with Kanye's thought process, I agree that rooms don't necessarily have to conform to the basic box shape we've stuck to as a basic standard shape, Instead we should explore how architecture should be fluid and have more flow in order to creatively challenge the mind. I think curves and circularity is something that is often strayed away and warned off by 3D designers because it is much more challenging and its human nature to shun away things that are challenging, however, visionaries such as Kanye, who have a unique perspective on architecture are the reason why the contemporary architecture movement is being pushed along currently, its merging art with a industrialised section of design and the buildings we are creating today are much more artistically involved compared to the architectural styles of the ages before

How this linked with my project:

I think his unique perspective really encapsulated what the architects of the future are thinking, as an aspiring designer, I want to push the boundaries of what architecture is and I want to merge the lines where it comes into art. The contemporary art movement is so unique and Kanye has described the goals and ideals of what the movement encapsulates. As my project follows the guidelines and falls into contemporary architecture, I really like the values and explanation Kanye has given and I feel my project falls into his thought process when it comes to building buildings that aren't just boxes.
